Can anyone tell me more about how the Tor browser works and why it’s considered more secure than other browsers?

I’ve been hearing a lot about the Tor browser and how it’s supposed to be more secure than other browsers. Can anyone shed some light on how it actually works and what makes it so different? I’ve heard it has something to do with routing internet traffic through a network of volunteer servers, but I’m not entirely sure. Any insight would be much appreciated.
